Haiti - Cholera Epidemic : The Asturias send a field hospital in Haiti

The Spanish autonomous community, "The Asturias", located on the northern coast of Spain, donated to Haiti, through its "Asturiana Cooperation Agency (AAC)" a field hospital of 70 m2 with all the medical equipment required for its operation.

The hospital, the first of its kind sent by the AAC, will be installed in Port-au-Prince and will coordinate with the Ministry with Health and Population (MSPP) and other humanitarian organizations, to fight against the cholera epidemic. "This hospital will leave the port of" muzzle "in Gijon, January 5 and is expected to arrive in Haiti 28 days later", said Marcos Cienfuegos, director of the AAC.

This project of 74.000 euros, was funded to the tune of 60,000 euros by the Government of Asturias and the rest was provided by the Haitian NGO PAPDA. Marcos Cienfuegos, said that the situation caused by the cholera epidemic in Haiti was dramatic "health services fear that in the coming weeks, a second wave of the epidemic".

Remarks confirmed by a statement of OCHA (Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs) of the United Nations on 18 December, 2010 which stated that in a report that "in the Northern Department, the cholera epidemic has entered into a second phase. New foci are found in remote areas".

Last cholera assessment: Since the beginning of the epidemic of cholera in the country (October 19, 2010), 148.787 people were infected and treated, 83.166 people were hospitalized and 3.333 people died. According to the latest report from the Ministry of Public Health and Population (MSPP), dated of December 26, 2010.
